September 2nd until September 4th, 2021 at Melk Abbey

The exhibition will open on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021 at 6 p.m. Tino Sehgal will be present and deliver the opening lecture this evening.

GLOBART succeeded in winning one of the most influential international artists, Tino Sehgal, to an exhibition at the GLOBART Academy.

In 2013 at the Venice Biennale, he was awarded the best artist and presented with Golden Lion. His solo-exhibitions took place in important places, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum for Modern Art in Frankfurt, the Gropius Bau in Berlin, and the Kunsthaus Bregenz.

For the first time in the Abbey Park of Melk and its pavilion, he is going to present a series of works that will merge and also create new scenes. The encounter with his work is central to the topic of "sense" as Sehgal continuously deals with the question of how social processes can take place or change and how life can succeed in being good. In an interview with Monopol, he states: “I can focus on converting the earth into as many objects as possible, or I can work on myself. This is the basic idea of my work: when I work on myself, I do not produce objects. But then I might have found something else, something interesting: quality of life.”

Tino Sehgal surprises his audience

Like no other artist of his time, Tino Sehgal stands for a radical reorientation of art and its experience. He constructs situations instead of material objects – social interactions in order to make the visitors relate to his work. This is usually done through conversations, singing and choreography. The situation becomes an experience, it touches and makes the visitors think or ensnares them in lively discussions. A process that begins in the exhibition but accompanies people well beyond this point in time.

This is also a main concern of GLOBART. As a think-tank, we make burning topics of our time experienceable with heart, brain and hand in order to develop ideas and tools for our lives and the shaping of a better future in a joint dialogue. The abbey gardens and the garden pavilion are an ideal place for this. One of the most important baroque parks becomes the playing field for the artist Tino Sehgal.

Other than time and place, there is no concrete information about the things Tino Segal is planning to do in Melk. As always, Tino Sehgal fascinates and surprises his audience in the exhibition once more.

Melk Abbey – Abbey Park and Pavilion

Melk Abbey and its park are one of the most important baroque syntheses of the arts. In a harmonious unity, spiritual and natural aspects find special expression in their interaction. The baroque and the English landscape gardens served as the aesthetic currents, which still characterise the Abbey Park's character today. The baroque garden pavilion with its exotic frescoes by Johann Wenzel Bergl is a true highlight.
